Crème fraîche

Last night I met up with my wonderful girlfriend H at the Echo, and as I drove past the man-made Echo Park Lake I became nostalgic; and memories of running loops around the lake on Saturday mornings filled my head. And its not that I miss Echo Park in particular, I miss living in a metropolitan area. I miss things being close.

Anyway this is not about that, this is about the pleasantries I stumbled upon at the Echo last night. H's friend Jeff/Jeof/Jeph??? is in the band Fol Chen and they performed last night with Karin Tatoyan. She was amazing. And amazing is an understatement. More like phenomenal. When listening to a new artist/band I ALWAYS start off pessimistic and cynical. (thats just me). Then I start to weed out things I dont like, and things that sound like its been done a million times over. At first I will admit, upon inital listen I thought, 'ok she sounds like bjork, big deal'. three songs later, i was madly in love. because although, i've never been the biggest fan of B-town i've always appreciated her talents. Thus, Karin is a force. She has a voices that carries you into a journey of her emotions, and her stage presence exemplifies the electric energy of her songs. Her band are VERY tight, and uber talented as well. They flowed harmoniously, and I felt myself taken-away.

Twas refreshing to stumble upon her last night. just when you think all 'new' music is shit (well, at least i think it is) you find that tiny diamond in the rough. Karin is definitely pushing the envelope, and may she get all the way through.
